Compassion & Cheer with Christmas Bikes

We partnered with Heart of Compassion, another local nonprofit, to refurbish bikes they distributed to families and kids for Christmas. Here are some heart warming stories of fixing bikes and making friends this past Christmas!

  • This father was discharged from the army due to a disability. He gave this bike to his younger daughter for Christmas.
  • Mary was full of energy and happy to be out of the house to join Heart of Compassion's outreach program and get a new bike!
  • At first, this young boy just wanted to be modest and take a toy truck as a gift. When asked if he would rather take a bicycle, he replied, “Are you sure?!” with a great big smile. What a heart for wanting less so others can have more!
  • A single mother and her two sons walk away with a bike for the youngest son. She works six days a week at a warehouse, and being able to give gifts to her sons this year was an answered prayer.

6-Cycle is Coming!

Free Bike Repair Feature: Ms Sylvia

Sylvia is a reliable volunteer at our Nicholtown Free Bike Repair site. She’ll scoff at that though: “Volunteer?! More like a bystander!” She’s not one to fix bicycles, but she and other hospitality volunteers certainly help connect the community. When Village Wrench began serving this neighborhood in 2018, Sylvia was the president of the neighborhood association. “When company comes to your house, you better be there!” she explains, so she began joining in on our monthly neighborhood gathering. The Nicholtown Free Bike Repair site has experienced a steady uptick in neighborhood traffic; Sylvia especially recalls one grandparent visiting every month with his middle school grandsons; over the course of a half year, the boys learned basic bicycle repair. Seeing Sylvia each month and hearing her talk about Village Wrench, other neighbors have brought their family’s bicycles for repair and maintenance too. I’ve known these friends my whole life, and I’ve never seen them ride in the neighborhood. Free Bike Repair has really grown and gotten to be a lot of fun. More people in the community are riding bicycles!”

Thank you for helping us connect the community through bicycle repair. We look forward to seeing you this Saturday!

January 2021 Newsletter

Thank you for loving Village Wrench!

As we reflect on this year and look forward to 2021, we at Village Wrench are deeply thankful for you and your extraordinary generosity. Despite the setbacks we all faced, you still made all of this possible at Village Wrench:

  • 12 teens were empowered to learn more about bicycles and themselves through 6-Cycle
  • 6 Youth Apprentices received hands-on employment training in the bike shop
  • 159 children and adults earned their own bicycle by serving our community
  • 18 kids participated in our first-ever summer bike camp
  • Bike Shop operating hours more than doubled

We’re geared up to continue connecting our community through bicycle repair, upward mobility, and educational empowerment this coming year. But right now, we want to pause and sincerely thank you. Thank you for your care and passion for neighbors and two wheels. Thank you for helping us work toward a community empowered and thriving through bicycles. You are integral to the Village Wrench family, and we are so grateful for you!

Paul's Christmas Bicycle

Paul* is a student at Berea Elementary School. His teachers told him about Village Wrench's Spread Kindness Christmas bike giveaway, where students could do a random act of kindness in exchange for a bicycle. Paul held the door open and let classmates go in front of him in line, and then he wrote a story to Village Wrench about how good it made him feel to put others first. When he picked up his bike at the start of winter break, he was SO excited. He has been using his holiday to learn how to ride his new set of wheels. We're thankful we were able to partner with Academy Sports and local bike shops to give away dozens of bikes to deserving kids this Christmas!

Our sister organization Village Engage is facilitating the Community Remembrance Project in Greenville, which memorializes documented victims of racial violence and fosters meaningful dialogue about race and justice.

Following the private soil collection ceremony of George Green in Taylors, Village Wrench is hosting a slow-roll ~3 mile bike ride at noon to honor Mr. Green. Email Jessica for the details on how to participate.

6-Cycle Students are on a Roll!

Teens develop character, bicycle repair, and ridership skills in revamped program

We are over halfway through our fall 6-Cycle class! In our updated curriculum, each week students reinforce new skills like cleaning our bikes, identifying parts, and fixing flats with lots of practice. After enjoying a meal together, we learn bike repair and then reflect on character strengths like growth mindset and grit before diving into ridership: starting and stopping, lookbacks, and signals.

Thank you for making impactful youth and workforce development possible at Village Wrench!

Here's a post from Randy after last month's free bike repair at West Greenville.
So fun to get reaquainted with my friend Alex. She has a special bike that sometimes needs special attention being repaired. So happy to get her back on the road with all of our friends at Village Wrench.
